the idea
Throughout history man has, at times, had to abandon his surroundings. This can be for a number of reasons such as disease, war, famine, poverty, natural disasters. Many of these places now stand in ruins and have, with time, been taken back by nature providing new homes for wildlife, plants or humans, whilst others have been given a new lease of life through some form of recycling and redevelopment.
Nature recovers and reintegrates what is abandoned.
Humans recycle what is abandoned.
Beauty emanates from what is abandoned and its transformation.
Project 'Abandoned?' explores the different ways man has, and can reuse his environment. Do we need to deplete the world’s resources by constructing new buildings and manufacturing more and more consumer objects? Is it really necessary to destroy ones heritage or to fill the world with waste? Are apparently abandoned places and things actually just waiting for someone to find, use and appreciate them once again? Is anything or anywhere ever really truly abandoned?
'Abandoned?' is a two-fold project.
It is a journey through abandoned places to create a documentary film
about the need to make use of abandoned places
and a series of photographic exhibitions exploring
the hidden beauty of the abandoned.
